Verna: The iconic Kesarval spring in Verna is set for a major facelift, with the government preparing a ₹13 crore proposal for its development and beautification. Water Resources Minister Subhash Shirodkar informed that while the estimate has been prepared, technical and administrative clearances are still awaited. The tendering process is expected to begin in another two to three months. He stressed that the spring’s water is crucial for irrigation in the area.
Amid growing concerns over contamination of the spring, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced that the government will establish a Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) for the Verna Industrial Estate to prevent seepage and industrial discharge from polluting the spring.
The CM added that instructions have been issued to industries in the estate to set up Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), and the Pollution Control Board has been directed to monitor their functioning closely.
The issue was raised in the Assembly by MLA Nilesh Cabral, who voiced concern over the deteriorating quality of water at the Kesarval spring due to industrial pollution. The combined efforts of beautification and environmental safeguards aim to restore the spring’s ecological and cultural significance while ensuring its continued utility for irrigation.
