Panaji: Fisheries Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar has informed that Goa government has proposed setting up an aquarium at Tuem in Pernem.
He informed that Department of Fisheries has already written to the North Goa Collector, seeking transfer of land for the project.
Halarnkar said that while the State does not have any fish breeding centres in the coastal villages of Pernem such as Morjim, Mandrem and Arambol, efforts are underway to expand aquaculture activities.
“At present, Goa has only one freshwater fish seed hatchery at Keri, Sattari, where Indian major carps and other carps are bred, and the fingerlings are supplied to farmers at reasonable rates,” he added
The Minister also highlighted that the government is supporting fishermen and co-operatives through financial aid, training and technical guidance under State schemes and the Central Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).
He added that new technologies like river cages, biofloc and bivalve farming are being promoted through awareness camps under the Atmanirbhar Bharat and Swayampurna Goem programmes.
“Training programmes, including six-month courses for fisher youth, are also being conducted to encourage adoption of aquaculture techniques,” minister said
