Pernem: Health Minister Vishwajit Rane has moved a proposal to bar contractual government doctors, earning between ₹8 lakh and ₹10 lakh annually, from engaging in private practice.
He said the decision is aimed at ensuring doctors focus fully on providing services to the Goa Medical College (GMC). The government has also decided to increase OPD timings in state-run hospitals.
Speaking after the inauguration of the Pernem municipal garden and new municipal building, Rane said the much-awaited Tuem hospital’s opening may be delayed to ensure “top-class facilities” from the outset.
He assured that first job preference at the hospital would be given to Pernem residents.
“It will be shameful if people of Pernem have to go to Mapusa for treatment after spending almost ₹140 crore on this hospital,” he said, adding that the facility will be tied up with GMC and specialist doctors will run its OPDs.
Rane also announced that Pernem is set for a facelift through multiple development projects aimed at creating employment for locals. Pernem MLA Pravin Arlekar and the municipal chairperson were present at the event.
