PANAJI: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced that the State government will soon float a fresh tender to revive the Sanjivani sugar factory in Dharbandora, which has remained shut since 2019.
Speaking to the media, Sawant said the tender document has already been processed by the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) cell, and the government is set to issue the tender shortly. The factory’s redevelopment will follow the PPP model, in a renewed bid to attract potential investors.
Previous attempts to revive the factory through tenders issued in October 2022 and January 2024 failed to draw suitable bidders.
The closure of the five-decade-old unit has severely impacted local sugarcane farmers. Despite the introduction of a compensation scheme, the farming community has continued to press for the factory’s reopening as a more sustainable solution.
In 2022, the government formed a 21-member Sugarcane Farmers Facilitation Committee, which later submitted a report with suggestions for revival. The recommendations included shifting production from sugar to ethanol and promoting nearby jaggery-making units to support farmers.
In another announcement, the Chief Minister revealed that a new Goa Dairy plant will be set up at Usgao. “The existing dairy will remain in place. A completely new plant will be established,” Sawant clarified.
