PANAJI: The Goa government has taken steps to safeguard the state’s traditional salt pans by issuing identity cards to salt pan farmers and providing financial assistance of ₹50,000, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant said at government function on ocasion of Opinion Poll Day.
Addressing a gathering, the Chief Minister cautioned that without timely intervention, salt pans could eventually exist only on paper.
Stressing the cultural and economic importance of the sector, he said the government has resolved to protect and revive salt pans across the state.
Dr Sawant announced that a dedicated government scheme aimed specifically at the welfare of salt pan farmers and the preservation of salt pans will be rolled out shortly.
The initiative, he said, is intended to provide sustained support to this traditional livelihood and prevent further decline of salt pan activity in Goa.
