PANAJI: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant today siad that his government will be writing to the Home Ministry, Director General of Shipping and Ministry of Environment demanding strict action on those responsible for creating pollution in deep sea.
CM today held a meeting with Tourism Minister Babu Ajgoankar, Environment Minister Nilesh Cabral and Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) over the re-surfacing of tar balls across Goa’ shore.
“Today I held meeting with Tourism, Environment Minister and GSPCB over the tar balls issue. Government will write
to Home Ministry, Director General of Shipping and Ministry of Environment demanding strict action on those responsible for creating pollution in deep sea,” said CM Sawant addressing a press conference
Tourism Minister Babu Ajgoankar said that the severity of the problem is more as compared to previous years but efforts are on to clean the beaches at the earliest.
“We have already directed to clear all the tar balls from the beaches,” said Ajgoankar
The tar balls- greasy blobs of thick black oil washing ashore is a phenomenon which occurs every year with varying intensity.
This year the tar balls have appeared on many beaches in Goa including Miramar ,Anjuna, Morjim, Mandrem, Keri, as well as Colva beach in South Goa.
As per study by NIO, source of tarballs that arrive after the monsoons was used oil dumped in the sea by tankers that pass between the Middle East and South-East Asia. The tarballs that arrived in May were found to be crude oil spills from the Bombay High region.
