BICHOLIM: The Bicholim MLA and the speaker, Rajesh Patnekar stated that they are trying to devise a permanent solution to floods in Sal village.
Speaking to media persons after visiting Sal village, he told that the low-lying areas of Khalchawada in Sal is submerged underwater, and water entered several houses in the town. He said that because of Tillari and other factors, there is always a danger of flood in the village.
“Because of heavy rainfall, there is a flood in the village. The people have suffered a loss to their household items, and also fields have been damaged. We are striving to devise a plan so that this problem does not exist next year.” Patnekar said.
He said that they would have a meeting with all the stakeholders to arrive at a solution. “We would convene a meeting with WRD and Tillari corporation to devise a solution to this problem. We are thankful that there has been no casualty, but the losses suffered by the farmers every year should be avoided.” Patnekar told.
He said that the locals have complained that Tillari is not informing them in advance about the release of waters. If they were announced earlier about the release of water from Tillari, they would have saved their belongings, including the tractors, pumps and other electronic equipment.” Patnekar stated.
The deputy CM, Chandrakant Kavlekar, who also visited the site, said that they would again visit the village on August 2 and the officials of WRD to resolve the issue.
“This year Sal village is affected because of the cyclone and now the floods. I would discuss the issue with the farmers and the WRD and try to come out with a solution.” Kavlekar told.
Meanwhile, today, the water level in Sal decreased as there was less rainfall. The villagers have complained to the government that they should be given compensation as about 10 tractors lying in the fields have been damaged along with the field.
