MAPUSA: The Founder’s Day of GS Amonkar Vidya Mandir, Mapusa, was celebrated on December 12 with a grand ceremony filled with pride and nostalgia. Staff, students, alumni, and well-wishers came together to honor the achievements of the school’s founder, Gundu Sitaram Amonkar, a renowned educationist, writer, and social reformer.
A Day of Celebration and Recognition
The event commenced with the traditional Lighting of the Lamp, symbolizing wisdom and knowledge, followed by a vibrant cultural display presented by students and teachers. Dance performances, songs, and speeches highlighted the school’s spirit and brought joy to the attendees.
In keeping with tradition, Dr. Narayan Desai was felicitated with the G S Amonkar Excellence Award by School Manager Mohan Kaul on behalf of the managing committee. Dr. Desai, in his speech, addressed the challenges in today’s educational system and encouraged parents and teachers to work collaboratively to create solutions. He urged parents to respect their children’s individuality, allowing them to dream and grow while instilling social manners.
Former student Clayton Barreto, currently serving as the Social Secretary to the High Commissioner at the High Commission of India in London, was honored with the G S Amonkar Alumnus Award by School Trustee Gurudas Natekar.
Clayton received a ceremonial salute from the students upon arrival and was warmly welcomed by dignitaries, staff, and students. During his address, he inspired students with his words: “It’s never too late to dream big. If you can lay a finger on your goal and find a perspective, you can achieve the impossible.”
Nostalgia and Gratitude
Clayton expressed his gratitude for the honor, stating, “It is such an honor to receive this prestigious award, especially in front of my parents, wife, son, siblings, sister-in-law, and former teachers, some of whom are present here today.” He reflected on how his time at the school shaped his journey and expressed pride in representing his school, Goa, and India on the international stage.
Former teachers who had taught Clayton attended the event and expressed their pride, saying, “It is an honor to have our student achieve such distinction and represent not only our school but also our state and country.”
Clayton interacted with teaching and office staff, complimenting their dedication to students’ holistic development. Headmistress Ms. Pooja Dalvi gave him a tour of the school, where he praised the positive redevelopment efforts.
Later, Clayton inaugurated the Art and Craft Exhibition put together by students, lauding their creativity and encouraging them to pursue their passions with dedication. “Your talent is remarkable, and I see great potential in each of you,” he said.
Honoring the Founder
Former headmaster Aureo Cunha Gomes paid tribute to the school’s founder, describing him as a humble, approachable teacher who inspired countless students.
Manuscript Release and Event Highlights
The event also saw the release of the Manuscript Magazine for 2024-25 by the day’s awardees, along with Art Teacher Ajay Kothawale and School Leader Seva Parab.
The event’s comperes, Rupa Parab, Pritam Halarnkar, and Alok Barve, seamlessly guided the program, which concluded with a renewed sense of pride and inspiration. The Founder’s Day celebration reaffirmed the enduring legacy of GS Amonkar Vidya Mandir and its continued commitment to excellence.
