QUEPEM: Gudi-Paroda road was submerged under the water after the water level in the Kushavati river started rising on Tuesday morning around 11 am. The Traffic from Quepem to Margao was diverted via another route.
When contacted the locals, they said during high tide in the Kushawati river water level is elevated, and it is due to 48 hours of continuous rain. This has also flooded some parts of Paroda village near the Parvat bus stop and also at the bridge that links Avedem-Cotombi to the Margao-Quepem road.
An area of Paroda from the bridge to the Parvat road junction, about one km to the west, also came under water.
Traffic from Margao to Quepem, Curchorem and Sanguem has been diverted through Chandor, and still, the water level is high in Paroda.
Although the PWD department started work to find a solution to floods, the road widening is ongoing, and the road level, cross road drainages, culverts etc., is also a factor for flooding. Therefore thought of giving height to the road, retaining wall construction is going on.
The Paroda bridge was built post-Goa liberation during Bandodkar’s first ministry. The bridge height is shallow, barely a few metres from the water level. Some villagers even risked their lives retrieving coconuts flowing over the bridge. All light vehicles plying from Margao to Quepem, Curchorem and Sanguem were diverted through Chandor in the morning, and traffic police were posted in flood-affected areas for the diversion of traffic.
