Guirim: In a strongly worded letter to the Water Resources Department (WRD), the Comunidade de Guirim has demanded an immediate stop to ongoing works related to the improvement of the Tar/Moira river waterway from Guirim to the NH bridge at Tar Junction in Mapusa, Bardez.
Addressed to the Executive Engineer, the letter references previous communication (dated February 1, 2025) and raises serious concerns about “haphazard” work being undertaken by the WRD contractors. The Comunidade asserts that the work is proceeding without any No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their body and in violation of due procedures.
The letter, signed by Tulio J. T. De N. Souza, President of the Comunidade, highlights that the ongoing work is reportedly causing “immense destruction” to ecologically sensitive wetland areas adjacent to the Mapusa Tar River at Guirim. Supporting complaints and press reports have been attached to the letter, which also references WRD’s earlier letter dated December 23, 2024, listing the affected survey numbers.
The Comunidade has categorically stated that no NOC was granted for the project and reiterated that the issue had already been raised in an earlier letter that received no response.
The WRD has been formally directed to halt the work immediately until the matter is resolved, with the Comunidade warning of further action if the destruction continues.
