BICHOLIM: A decision to restrict media entry into the Bicholim Primary Health Centre (PHC) has triggered strong backlash from journalists, who argue that such a move undermines press freedom and transparency in public institutions.
A notice placed at the entrance of the PHC explicitly bars media personnel from entering the premises. The development comes in the wake of a recent controversy surrounding media presence at Goa Medical College (GMC), raising concerns about a broader trend of curbing press access to healthcare facilities.
Media professionals and associations have condemned the restriction, stressing that public health centres must remain open to media scrutiny, especially in matters involving public welfare and accountability.
“This kind of ban has no place in a democratic society. Government-run health facilities should not function in secrecy,” said a senior journalist.
With mounting criticism, several media groups are expected to approach state officials, urging them to withdraw the restriction and ensure unhindered access to public health institutions.
