New Delhi: Indian long distance runner Gulveer Singh delivered an impressive performance at the New York City Half Marathon, finishing third while also breaking India’s national record for the men’s half marathon.
The 27 year old runner completed the 21.1 kilometre race in 59 minutes and 42 seconds, surpassing the previous national record of 1 hour and 30 seconds set by Avinash Sable during the Delhi Half Marathon in 2020. Singh’s timing marked the first time an Indian athlete has run the distance in under one hour.
The race was won by South Africa’s Adriaan Wildschutt, who crossed the finish line in 59 minutes and 30 seconds. Morocco born American runner Zouhair Talbi finished second with a time of 59 minutes and 41 seconds, narrowly ahead of Singh.
With this achievement, Gulveer Singh further strengthened his reputation as one of India’s leading distance runners. He has become the first Indian athlete to hold multiple national records across several events, ranging from the 3,000 metres on the track to the 25 kilometre road race.
Singh is also an Asian Games medallist in the 10,000 metres from the 2022 Asian Games and currently holds India’s national records in both the 5,000 metres and 10,000 metres track events. His strong performances have consistently placed him among the top long distance runners in Asia.
He continued his success at the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea, where he secured gold medals in both the 5,000 metres and 10,000 metres events.
Looking ahead, Singh is aiming for podium finishes at the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games scheduled in Glasgow and the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi and Nagoya.
Currently training in Colorado Springs in the United States, Singh said he feels confident about his form and is focused on achieving strong results in the upcoming international competitions.
