Georgetown: Guyana has extended its full support to India in the global fight against terrorism, with Vice-President Bharrat Jagdeo declaring that his country “stands unequivocally” with India. The statement came during a meeting with a visiting Indian parliamentary delegation led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Sunday.
“We are against terrorism, and we believe that all those who perpetrate terrorist acts must be brought to justice,” Jagdeo affirmed after meeting with the nine-member delegation.
The Indian MPs are visiting Guyana as part of a global outreach to communicate India’s stance following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, where 26 civilians were killed by The Resistance Front, a group affiliated with Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba. In response, India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting terrorist infrastructure across the Line of Control, including Pakistan-occupied areas of Kashmir.
Shashi Tharoor described the meeting with Jagdeo as “excellent” and said he appreciated Guyana’s expression of sympathy and solidarity following the Pahalgam tragedy. The MPs’ visit also coincides with Guyana’s 59th Independence Day, with the delegation scheduled to attend President Irfaan Ali’s midnight address.
The Indian delegation represents a cross-section of political parties, underscoring national unity on the issue of terrorism. Alongside Tharoor, it includes Tejasvi Surya (BJP), Milind Murli Deora (Shiv Sena), Shambhavi (Lok Janshakti Party), Sarfaraz Ahmad (Jharkhand Mukti Morcha), GM Harish Balayogi (TDP), Shashank Mani Tripathi, and Bhubaneswar Kalita.
While in Georgetown, the delegation also met with the Indian diaspora and spiritual leaders from organisations such as ISKCON, the Art of Living, and the Brahma Kumaris. BJP MP Tejasvi Surya noted that these groups serve as cultural and spiritual pillars for the local Indian community.
Economic ties were also discussed during the visit. Tharoor noted Guyana’s remarkable 30% annual economic growth, fueled by recent offshore oil and gas discoveries. He expressed optimism about deepening bilateral cooperation in trade, energy, and development.
India’s High Commission in Georgetown said the MPs detailed India’s firm stance on the Pahalgam attack, Operation Sindoor, and related issues such as the Indus Water Treaty, reinforcing India’s policy of “Zero Tolerance for Terrorism.”
Vice-President Jagdeo reiterated Guyana’s unwavering support for India in its battle against terrorism, affirming a shared commitment to global peace and justice
