Margao: Raising objections to the proposed development at the Margao Municipal Garden, Madganvcho Awaaz and youth leader Prabhav Naik has written to the Chairman of the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC), urging that the tender process be immediately put on hold and detailed clarifications be provided.
In his communication, Naik stated that the ₹3.96 crore proposal reportedly involves demolishing an existing structure and constructing a two-storey building at a location that holds cultural and religious importance for residents. The garden has traditionally hosted the Sarvajanik Shree Ganeshotsav and several community events over the years, he noted.
Naik said the proposed project has triggered concern among citizens and devotees, particularly regarding the possible impact on the heritage and sanctity of the site. He sought clarity on the purpose and scope of the construction, and questioned whether feasibility studies, heritage impact assessments, and consultations with local stakeholders were conducted before issuing the tender.
He further pointed out that apprehensions are being expressed by sections of the public that the building could be used for commercial activities such as a bar, restaurant, massage spa, or dance bar. According to Naik, any such use would be unacceptable and contrary to the cultural character of the area, especially in view of objections earlier raised during discussions on the Master Plan 2041.
Meanwhile, Naik has also submitted a separate memorandum to the Margao Municipal Council seeking details of the project. He urged the Chief Officer to place all related documents, including the council resolution, in the public domain and consult citizens before moving ahead with the work.
