New Delhi:
As the Delhi assembly elections approach on February 5, a bitter feud has erupted between Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal over allegations of the Yamuna water supply being poisoned. This controversy has not only heightened political tensions but also drawn the attention of the Election Commission and the judiciary.
AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal sparked the controversy by accusing the BJP-led Haryana government of deliberately contaminating the Yamuna water with ammonia, thereby jeopardizing Delhi’s water supply. Kejriwal claimed that the ammonia levels in the Yamuna water had increased sharply, posing a significant health risk to Delhi’s residents.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini vehemently denied these allegations, labeling them as false propaganda aimed at deflecting attention from Kejriwal’s own failures in managing Delhi. Saini accused Kejriwal of spreading lies to create tension between Haryana and Delhi, and to cover up his own mismanagement of the city’s water supply.
The Election Commission issued a notice to Kejriwal, requesting him to provide evidence for his claims about the Yamuna water poisoning. In response, Kejriwal reiterated his allegations and called for a criminal case against Saini. This exchange has further escalated the political standoff.
The Haryana government has taken a step further by filing a complaint against Kejriwal in a Sonepat court over his Yamuna poisoning claims. This legal action underscores the seriousness with which Haryana is treating Kejriwal’s accusations.
Saini has been particularly harsh in his criticism, suggesting that Kejriwal has tarnished his birthplace, Haryana, and that he belongs in Tihar jail due to his alleged corruption. Kejriwal had previously spent months in Tihar jail over his alleged involvement in the Delhi excise police scam. Saini’s remarks have added a personal dimension to the political spat, with Saini calling Kejriwal “a shop of lies” and accusing him of betraying the people of Delhi.
The dispute has significant implications for the upcoming Delhi assembly elections. With the polls scheduled for February 5 and the results to be announced on February 8, both parties are leveraging this issue to sway public opinion. Saini’s campaign has emphasized the need to recognize the importance of the upcoming days and the work that needs to be done, while Kejriwal’s camp continues to highlight the alleged negligence and corruption of the Haryana government.
