It’s shocking that one by one the infrastructure built by one contractor M Venkat Rao, reportedly the son-in-law of BJP top central Venkaiah Naidu, former Vice President of India, is crumbling within months and no action has been initiated by the Goa government for obvious reasons but why is the Opposition quiet? Is he their son-in-law too?
Soon after the landslide at Dhargal as the retaining wall built by MVR Infra came crashing down due to rains, Congress leaders Amit Patkar, and Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao and Altone Vaz rushed to the spot and demanded action against the contractor and soon were back to their business. It seemed like a token visit and nothing special.
The next day on Tuesday there was another landslide blocking the entire national highway at Poraskade in Naibag and this time the Congress decided not to waste fuel (petrol/ diesel) and instead make a statement on social media so accordingly Yuri Alemao and Amit Patkar sent their customary posts demanding MVRs arrest. What more can they do in a 20-30 word tweet isn’t it? (sic)
Does the Congress think, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari or Goa CM Dr Pramod Sawant will be affected by the tweets or sending press statements?
Well, this has been the usual story of not just the Congress but the entire Opposition in Goa. On the face of it, they claim unity but on actual ground, it is zero.
There was no Vijai Sardesai of Goa Forward, no Venzy Viegas, Cruz Silva of AAP or Viresh Borkar of Revolutionary Goans or for that matter not even Adv Carlos Alvares Fereira of Congress during the Congress’ visit to Dhargal.
There is no unanimity in the Opposition benches in Goa. They seem to be opposing as per their convenience. CM Sawant and BJP State President Sadanand Shet Tanavade are also unfazed by this random statement and have already stopped taking the Opposition seriously.
With the Assembly session starting next week, the National Highway issue would have been a major weapon for the Opposition to floor the government in the House but they think otherwise.
Sadly the Opposition feels such issues are time-wasting and would make no difference. They have already given up on the fact that there can be no action against MVR Infra.
Especially, this comes after Opposition knew they had lost the North Goa seat by over one lakh votes so they have no obligation to the people of North Goa.
Consider this, Yuri Alemao has suddenly become aggressive on the Kala Academy issue and visited the premises for shoddy works in renovation but where was he when Vijai Sardesai was taking up the issue in the Assembly? He did make some random statements but those lacked force and conviction. If the Opposition was united Minister Govind Gaude would be sitting at home by now. But no, here too the Opposition let the government off the hook due to division in the Opposition benches.
Coming back to MVR Infra here — we list problems with many of their projects in Goa which demonstrate that MVR is a habitual offender, and needs to be blacklisted immediately.
– Curti-Khandekar highway pipeline collapse leading to Tiswadi water crisis.
– Gaundalim Bridge with major flaws and repeated closures for repairs.
– Miramar-Donapaula concrete road disaster.
– Donapaula jetty collapse.
– Kala Academy jetty collapse.
— The flyover at Chimbel on Old Goa was bypassed and abandoned after foundation problems.
– South Goa collectorate building abandoned.
– Dabolim grade separator delayed and substandard work.
– Cavellosim-Assolna bridge was delayed, yet opened while incomplete.
– Loutolim-Cortalim link road wall defects.
— NH66 sinks in at Dhargal
— Haphazard and landfilling works on NH66 cause floods in Guirim
With so much fodder to nail the government, one wonders what the Opposition needs more. They blame the media for not supporting them but the Opposition needs to agree the media is doing a much better job then the elected representatives in exposing the wrong deeds of this government.
