New Delhi: Former Australian opener Matthew Hayden has tipped India’s left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav to emerge as the spearhead in the upcoming five-Test series against England, starting June 20 in Leeds, and suggested that Kuldeep has the potential to scalp 20 wickets during the tour.
With Ravichandran Ashwin having recently retired, Kuldeep now stands to occupy a permanent spot in India’s Test side. In 13 Tests so far, he has claimed 56 wickets at an average of approximately 22, including four five-wicket hauls, making him a significant spin threat in English conditions.
Hayden emphasized Kuldeep’s unique skills, drawing comparisons to Australia’s reliable spinner Nathan Lyon, whose absence in the last Ashes underscored the importance of a steady spinner. “Someone like Kuldeep Yadav could be a key 20 wicket bowler for them,” he stated, pointing out how wrist-spin could change the dynamics in England.
Ahead of the England series, the ICC World Test Championship final between Australia and South Africa will take place at Lord’s (June 11–15). Hayden praised Australia’s balanced bowling attack and noted that taking 20 wickets remains vital to success in Test cricket—a blend of pace and spin, much like Australia’s current setup.
