PANAJI: The High Courtof Bombay at Goa has ordered all village panchayats and municipal councils to submit affidavits within a week detailing actions taken against illegal structures, particularly those obstructing public roads. The directive follows an earlier suo motu Public Interest Litigation (PIL) concerning unauthorized constructions.
The Division Bench, comprising Justice Suman Shyam and Justice Amit Jamsandekar, noted that while some local bodies had filed compliance affidavits, many had missed the deadline.
“Several village panchayats and municipal councils have submitted affidavits, but many remain non-compliant. They are now directed to file their affidavits within a week and provide copies to the Amicus Curiae and designated nodal officers,” the court stated.
Additionally, the court instructed the two appointed nodal officers to review the affidavits and submit reports within four weeks. The matter has been scheduled for further hearing on April 6, when the bench will assess the compliance status and decide on further action, if necessary.
This move comes as part of ongoing monitoring of the PIL addressing encroachments and unauthorized structures that affect road safety and public infrastructure in the state.
