PANAJI: The High Court of Bombay at Goa has issued notices on a petition filed by Fr Bolmax Pereira, who approached the court seeking the quashing of the FIR lodged against him.
Following the hearing, in which Advocate V Braganza presented a brief argument, the respondents received notices from the High Court bench consisting of Justices M S Sonak and Bharat Deshpande, which were due on December 11.
Following a sizable gathering outside the Vasco Police Station calling for Fr. Pereira to be arrested for remarks he made during a sermon that was posted on YouTube, Fr. Pereira was booked for his remarks.
About 150–200 Shivaji devotees, or Shiv premis, gathered in front of the police station in the port town of Vasco on August 22 of this year.
They demanded that the Catholic priest and social activist Pereira be taken into custody for remarks he had made about Shivaji during a religious ceremony.
The crowd refused to back down and demanded that Fr. Pereira be taken into custody, even after the police had booked him under sections 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 295A (deliberate acts to outrage religious feelings) based on a filed complaint.
