MAPUSA: The Urban Health Centre (UHC), Mapusa, has issued a final warning to the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC), directing it to clean up the town’s fish and meat market within seven days or face the premises being sealed indefinitely for posing a public health risk.
The notice, signed by Urban Health Officer Dr Dinesh Parab, highlights the civic body’s continued negligence and failure to maintain basic hygiene despite repeated instructions and several citizen complaints. A recent joint inspection by officials from multiple departments, including the MMC, revealed appalling conditions—stagnant water, rotting garbage, broken walls, and absence of essential amenities such as toilets and running water.
Ironically, the ultimatum follows just weeks after Chief Officer Chandrakant Shetkar reprimanded the town’s garbage contractor for poor waste management. Residents have mocked the situation as “the pot calling the kettle black,” accusing MMC of ignoring its own duties.
The UHC’s report has been forwarded to the Directorate of Health Services and the Deputy Collector, Bardez, for further action. Vendors say the market’s dismal condition reflects “civic indifference at its worst.”
