New Delhi: Health authorities in Indore have detected 20 new cases of diarrhoea following an extensive screening drive conducted in the Bhagirathpura locality, the epicentre of a water contamination crisis that has already claimed several lives. The latest cases were identified after medical teams examined 9,416 residents across 2,354 households as part of an ongoing door to door survey aimed at containing the outbreak.
The outbreak has put the spotlight on drinking water safety in the city, which has previously been recognised for its cleanliness. Officials confirmed that contaminated water supply in Bhagirathpura has been linked to the spread of the disease. So far, a total of 398 patients have required hospitalisation due to diarrhoea related complications.
Out of those admitted, 256 patients have been discharged after showing significant recovery. At present, 142 individuals remain under medical care in various hospitals. Among them, 11 patients are being treated in intensive care units, indicating the seriousness of the condition in a small but critical segment of cases.
To strengthen response efforts, a specialised team from the National Institute for Research in Bacterial Infections has reached Indore. The expert group is assisting local health authorities with technical guidance, laboratory analysis, and containment strategies to prevent further spread of the illness. Their involvement is expected to help identify the exact source of contamination and improve treatment protocols.
The district administration has officially confirmed six deaths so far attributed to the consumption of polluted water in the affected area. However, the situation remains sensitive, as differing figures have emerged from other quarters. While civic authorities have acknowledged receiving information about additional fatalities, local residents have claimed that the death toll is significantly higher and includes vulnerable individuals such as infants.
Municipal and health departments continue to monitor the situation closely, with emphasis on providing safe drinking water, distributing medicines, and ensuring rapid medical intervention. Surveillance and sanitation measures have been intensified to stabilise conditions in Bhagirathpura and prevent the outbreak from spreading to nearby areas.
Officials have urged residents to avoid untreated water and report symptoms immediately as containment operations remain underway.
