CANACONA: Heavy rains have caused significant damage in Canacona, with several trees falling and disrupting normal life. The Fire services have been working tirelessly to clear the roads in various parts of the taluka. The Department of Electricity also suffered significant loss, with damages to the tune of over Rs. 7 lakhs. According to Canacona Electricity Department Assistant Engineer Govind Bhat, approximately 15 electricity poles were broken and alignments were damaged in multiple areas, including Khola, Agonda, Galgibhaga, Potke (Poinguinim), Loliem-Polem, Gaondongrim, and Gulem. The power supply was also disrupted several times due to the damage.
In the last two days, Canacona has experienced over 100 mm of rainfall, with heavy rains escalating during the wee hours of Sunday and subsiding by evening time.
Canacona Fire services personnel have been actively responding to incidents, with at least four jungle trees falling on the road in the last 24 hours. They rushed to clear fallen trees from different parts of the taluka, including NH66 road near Polem Checkpost, Hathipaul (near Forest gate), near Partagal Temple, and on the inner road at Goynadal. Additionally, a mud wall of an unoccupied house at Mastimoll collapsed, and a huge landslide occurred at Ambdem in Khola village.
The situation further necessitated the Fire Services personnel to rush to Marlim to clear a damaged electricity line. Meanwhile, all the three major rivers of Canacona at Galgibaga, Talpona, and Saleri have begun to flow violently, activating several other tributaries and revulets within the last two days of heavy rains.
