PANAJI: Goa continues to experience a wet spell, with light rain and thunderstorms reported across the State through Saturday extending a pattern that began on October 20 with three consecutive nights of moderate to heavy rainfall.
Earlier in the week, the State saw humid and sunny conditions, but the buildup of thunderclouds led to intense showers after dusk.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa attributed the weather to a depression over the southeast Arabian Sea and a low-pressure system that formed over north interior Tamil Nadu.
The system has drifted west-northwest, now lying over south interior Karnataka and nearby areas, influencing weather across Goa.
In the past 24 hours, most parts of the State received very light to light rain, while a few places recorded moderate rainfall.
The maximum temperature reached 33.0°C and the minimum was 25.2°C, with humidity levels at 90 per cent — all above normal for this time of year. Similar weather is expected to persist over the next two days, with daytime highs around 32°C and lows near 25°C.
The IMD has issued a yellow alert until October 26, warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 30 to 40 km/h, occasionally peaking at 50 km/h. Heavy showers are likely in isolated pockets on Friday, followed by light to moderate rain on October 25 and 26.
The ongoing rains have caused damage in several areas. At Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium in St. Cruz, the decorative arch set up for the launch of the ‘Mhaje Ghar’ housing scheme collapsed due to heavy rain and strong winds. A landslide near the Church View building below the High Court in Panaji affected nearby houses. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, especially in vulnerable areas, as the heavy rainfall continues.
The persistent wet conditions have disrupted daily life and raised concerns over the safety of temporary structures, prompting authorities to remain on high alert to respond to emergencies.
