CANACONA: Does a Hailstorm have hit Shellim area in Loliem-Polem village early Sunday morning?
In an early Sunday morning blaze at about 4.30 am, a heavy cloudburst sorts of torrential rains have caused some extensive damages to some of the houses and literarily destroyed plantations (Kulagar) village in Shellim area of Loliem-Polem village.
According to Fire Services, atleast three houses belonging to Ermit Pereira, Pankaj Bandekar and Dominic Fernandes all situated in close proximity of each other suffered damages after the roofs have either collapsed or blown-off and caused vast devastation of plantations such as arecunut, coconut-trees and other plantations in the vicinity.
With the rafters broken and Mangalore tiles crashing inside, the mud walls of one of these houses suffered damages as rainwater seeped inside the houses. This particular house was reportedly unoccupied at the time. Trees have been uprooted while roof-sheets of two of the houses at Shellim has blown off. Heavy damages are caused in the neighboring plantations as Arecanut trees were felled like nine-pins, many coconut trees also had come down and other plantations were routed in the area. Losses to the tune of lakhs of rupees is believed to have been suffered in the hailstorm as Fire personnel after first coordinating in the area on Sunday evening have once again reached the area to assist in whatever way possible on Monday morning informed sources. It was a cyclone type of hailstorm or cloudburst with heavy rains, claims the locals.
Elsewhere, trees including coconut trees, Mango, Custard-apple and Bread-Fruit trees fell on houses, Cowshed, Electricity alignments amidst heavy rains and intermitted cyclonic winds causing losses to the tune of several thousand of rupees in Canacona.
The Fire services personnel were on their toes since the wee hours of Sunday as responding to distress call at about 02.50 hours, rescued a Cow trapped to a Wooden ladder and struggling to break-free at Delem.
A tree have felled on a Cowshed at Char-Rasta causing 25,000 losses, while Fire Services personnel stepped-in to save over Rs.55,000/-, while the personnel rushed to clean at tree fallen on road at Mokhardwade, Poinguinim and another tree fallen on road and electrical alignments at Muthal-Galgibaga.
A mando tree fell on a house at Mokhard-Bhatpal belonging to ne Ashok Dessai causing losses of 25000, and fire brigade saved 80,000. A breadfruit tree collapsed on the house of Sunanda Naik at Nagarcem, causeing loses of 2,000, helped to remove a coconut tree fell on the house of George Diniz at Palolem causes losses of over 5000.
Fire services rushed to clear a coconut tree at Bharas in Gaondongrim that fell on Electrical alignment. And another Mango tree from the road at Galgibaga near railway bridge. A Custard apple fell on the house of Deepak Raikar at Chaudi causing loss of 5000 rupees on Sunday night, and a jungle tree felon road at Maxem near railway bridge is cleared by Fire personnel.
While filing this report, Fire personnel are on the job to assist and clear a Coconut Tree that fell on the house of one Sandip Dessai Near panchayat Ghar at Poinguinim. A Coconut tree fell on the house of Preetesh Pagi near Bhumipurush temple, Palolem, a huge tree collapsed at Amone in between two houses and partly on the house of one Sachin Deikar and a jungle tree that fell on the road damaging electricity alignment at Mangan in Canacona.
