Canberra: A Hindu temple in Melbourne’s Boronia suburb has been defaced with racist graffiti in what authorities are calling a disturbing act of hate. The slur “Go Home Brown C**t” was spray-painted on the Swaminarayan Temple on July 21, with similar messages found at two nearby Asian-owned restaurants, according to a report by The Australia Today.
Makrand Bhagwat, President of the Hindu Council of Australia, condemned the act, calling it “heartbreaking” for the temple’s volunteers and worshippers. “Our temple is a place of peace, devotion, and unity. It’s where we come together to celebrate our faith and culture. To see it desecrated like this is deeply painful,” he said.
The temple serves a large portion of Melbourne’s Indian community, hosting daily prayers, festivals, and community meals.
Victoria’s Premier Jacinta Allan issued a strong statement condemning the incident. “This wasn’t just vandalism—it was a deliberate act of hate meant to spread fear and division. It’s hateful, racist, and deeply disturbing. There is absolutely no place for such behaviour in Victoria,” she said.
She confirmed that Victoria Police is actively investigating the incident and assured the community that the state government stands with them. Allan also said that Australia’s Minister for Multicultural Affairs would visit the temple soon to offer support and listen to community concerns directly.
“No community should ever have to face something like this,” Allan added. “But in speaking out, you’ve shown strength and dignity. Your culture, your faith, and your contributions are valued and vital to Victoria’s future.”
Police have confirmed they are investigating “four linked incidents” in the Boronia and Bayswater areas, including graffiti discovered on a healing centre, the Swaminarayan Temple, and two restaurants on Boronia Road. Authorities were alerted around 9:30 am on July 21, and investigations are ongoing.
Community leaders and anti-racism advocates have called for stronger protections and a clear message that acts of racial hatred will not be tolerated in Australia.
