PANAJI: Goa Police detained several Congress leaders, including Opposition Leader Yuri Alemao, State President Amit Patkar, and Vice President Sunil Kawthankar, during a protest march to CM Pramod Sawant’s Official residence.
The leaders were taken into preventive custody near Azad Maidan. Goa Congress leaders stated that the government is trying to suppress the voice of opposition and whistleblowers in exposing the land grabbing case.
Speaking to reporters, Amit Patkar said,” Today the entire Goa is watching how a land grabbing accused escaped from the custody of the crime branch but the government did not do anything,” said Patkar
He further said that they have seen how Suleman Siddiqui (a land grab accused) escaped from the police custody. But this government is not saying anything about that.
“Action is being taken against those who are whistleblowers.” he added
The protestors wanted to walk to Altinho, a locality in the city which houses the official residence of CM Dr Pramod Sawant. “The state government must resign over this jobs for cash scam. The CM is helming the scam. We are seeking a judicial inquiry People close to the BJP are being held in the scam,” Patkar claimed.
Goa Congress President highlighted the grave security lapse and expressed concern over the failure of the Goa Crime Branch to prevent the escape of such a high-profile individual.
“It was emphasized that Suleman Siddique Khan’s apprehension is critical to ensuring justice and arresting the accused who is involved in land grabbing racket in Goa,” he added
The Congress Party also condemned the inefficiency of the Goa Police under the BJP-led government, holding them accountable for their inability to prevent such an incident.
Leader of Opposition (LoP) Yuri Alemao said that Home Ministry has become a shelter home for criminals
“law & order situation has collapsed; govt not bothered; cases & crime increasing,” said LoP Yuri Alemao
Several leaders also said that Congress during its ruling never suppressed the voice of people, instead after hearing them rolled back decisions. ”
Now the moment you speak out, the ED and CBI come behind you. This is the way you are being threatened into silence. This is not a democracy,” they said.
“People are afraid to speak, because they know if they speak out, then they will be harassed,” they added
