CALANGUTE: Acting on complaints from the Shree Shantadurga Temple Committee and concerned locals, the Calangute Panchayat, along with members of the Temple Committee, conducted an inspection of a hookah shop operating opposite the Shree Shantadurga Temple at Naika Vaddo.
The shop, operating under the name “Vape Store,” was accused of hurting the sanctity of the temple and the sentiments of devotees.
Concerns were also raised about the shop’s late-night operations and suspicious activities.
The establishment prominently displayed signboards, allegedly encouraging the sale of hookah accessories in close proximity to the revered temple.
During the inspection, Calangute BJP President and Temple Committee member Yeshwant Candolkar emphasized the need to maintain the sanctity of the temple surroundings and ensure no commercial activity disrupts the spiritual atmosphere.
Following the inspection, the Panchayat sealed the shop, citing violations of regulations. The Panchayat has also initiated steps to revoke the establishment’s licence and instructed the removal of the large signboards promoting the shop.
The Shree Shantadurga Temple Committee, which had passed a resolution on December 8 demanding action against the shop, has welcomed the Panchayat’s swift measures. Residents have expressed relief, hoping the action will deter similar establishments from disrupting the sanctity of the area in the future.
The Panchayat reiterated its commitment to preserving the cultural and spiritual ethos of Calangute while taking strict action against illegal establishments.
