New Delhi: Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has dismissed speculation about retirement, stating that he remains fully motivated to continue playing cricket despite being out of the national team for more than a year.
The experienced pacer said he does not allow retirement thoughts to influence him, explaining that such thinking can negatively affect a player’s mindset. According to Shami, he will only consider stepping away from the sport when he feels physically exhausted or loses the enjoyment of playing.
Shami last appeared for India national cricket team over a year ago, and since then a return to the side has not materialised despite his recovery from injury. The reasons behind his absence from international selection remain unclear, with decisions resting with the Board of Control for Cricket in India and the selection committee headed by Ajit Agarkar.
During the 2025 to 2026 domestic season, Shami continued to demonstrate strong form for Bengal cricket team. He picked up 67 wickets across major tournaments including the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, performances that kept him in contention for a national recall.
The pacer had been considered for selection during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series and the tour of England but chose to prioritise recovery from a foot injury at the time. Despite returning to competitive cricket, he has yet to feature in the current plans of the Indian team, leading to speculation that younger bowlers are now being preferred.
Shami is currently representing Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League 2026 season. After a challenging previous campaign in which he managed only six wickets in nine matches, the fast bowler is aiming to regain his rhythm and make a strong impact for his new franchise.
A former Purple Cap winner, Shami emphasised that his focus remains on performing to the best of his ability. He said he intends to give his full commitment on the field and fulfil the responsibilities expected of him as a bowler.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his international future, the veteran pacer maintained that he is enjoying the game and remains determined to continue contributing with dedication and a positive approach.
