New Delhi: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced new, clearly defined powerplay regulations for shortened T20 matches, bringing greater clarity and consistency to the game’s playing conditions. The revised rules, set to take effect from July 2025, will apply in situations where T20 matches are reduced due to weather or other interruptions.
Under the new guidelines, the number of powerplay overs will be proportionally adjusted based on the total number of overs in an innings. For instance, in an eight-over innings, only 2.2 overs will be designated as powerplay, during which only two fielders will be allowed outside the 30-yard circle. Similarly, in a five-over game, the powerplay will last for 1.3 overs. This change aims to maintain fairness and ensure that both batting and bowling sides adapt effectively to shortened formats.
According to the ICC’s updated table, a six-over innings will have 1.5 powerplay overs, while a seven-over innings will feature 2.1. The pattern continues progressively—2.4 powerplay overs for a nine-over game, and a full three overs for a 10-over innings. Matches of 11, 12, and 13 overs will have 3.2, 3.4, and 3.5 overs of powerplay, respectively. For 14, 15, and 16-over matches, the powerplay duration will increase to 4.1, 4.3, and 4.5 overs.
The ICC’s decision to introduce these precise powerplay calculations ensures a standardised approach across all T20 internationals and tournaments. It also helps eliminate confusion among players, officials, and fans during rain-affected or otherwise shortened games, offering a fair structure to maintain the competitive balance of the format.
