New Delhi: The iconic Eden Gardens has received a positive assessment ahead of the upcoming Men’s T20 World Cup, with the International Cricket Council expressing satisfaction with the stadium’s facilities and overall preparedness. The global tournament is scheduled to be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7, placing Eden Gardens among the most important venues of the competition.
A joint inspection team conducted a detailed review of the stadium, examining the playing surface, dressing rooms, hospitality areas, corporate boxes, and other supporting infrastructure. Officials overseeing the inspection indicated that the venue meets international standards and is well equipped to host high profile matches during the tournament. The assessment reinforced confidence in Eden Gardens’ readiness to stage a successful World Cup.
Eden Gardens is slated to host five group stage matches, including one of the opening day fixtures. In addition, the historic stadium is scheduled to stage a Super Eight match and a semifinal, subject to tournament progression scenarios. These marquee games underline the venue’s significance in the overall World Cup schedule.
Among the group stage fixtures, several matches involving Bangladesh are planned at Eden Gardens. However, uncertainty has emerged over Bangladesh’s participation after concerns were raised by their officials regarding security arrangements. These concerns surfaced following the withdrawal of a senior Bangladeshi player from the Indian Premier League due to evolving circumstances, which prompted further discussion within the Bangladesh camp.
Despite the apprehensions expressed, the tournament organisers have maintained the existing match schedule and have not indicated any plans to relocate fixtures. Contingency plans are in place should a team withdraw, with replacement options determined by international rankings.
The confirmation of Eden Gardens’ readiness provides a boost to preparations for the World Cup, especially given the stadium’s legacy and its ability to host large crowds and high pressure encounters. With its rich history and upgraded facilities, Eden Gardens is expected to play a central role in delivering a smooth and memorable tournament experience for players and fans alike.
