New Delhi: The Mumbai Indians secured their first win of the IPL 2025 season with a convincing victory against the Kolkata Knight Riders. However, their triumph was overshadowed by concerns over former captain Rohit Sharma’s form. Former England captain Michael Vaughan has voiced his opinion that if Rohit weren’t such a high-profile player, his recent performances would likely lead to him losing his spot in the team.
Rohit Sharma’s performances in the IPL 2025 season have been underwhelming, with scores of 0, 8, and 13 in his first three matches. This slow start has raised eyebrows, especially given that he is no longer the captain of the Mumbai Indians. Vaughan emphasized that as a batter without the added value of leadership, Rohit’s current form is not good enough for a player of his caliber.
Vaughan also highlighted that if Rohit were still captain, his role would allow more flexibility with his batting performance. However, without the captaincy, his contributions are being judged purely on his batting, and he needs to improve these numbers significantly.
The decision to use Rohit as an Impact Substitute limits his field involvement, underscoring the challenge he faces in regaining his rhythm. Vaughan believes that Mumbai Indians need to find a way to get the best out of Rohit, potentially through discussions about his role and performance.
Vaughan also expressed confusion over why Rohit, who excels as India’s captain, is not leading the Mumbai Indians. He suggested that Rohit’s leadership abilities would add significant value to the team, beyond just his batting.
