Margao: Concerns over illegal gambling in Margao have escalated, with residents calling for immediate action against illegal Tambola (Housie) organizers.
This issue has significant implications for public order and legal compliance, impacting not only Margao but also other areas in South Goa. The recent activities have prompted a request letter to various authorities, including the Director General of Police and the Superintendent of Police, in South Goa.
The request letter highlights an illegal Housie event organized by Shri Carey at Pedda, Benaulim village, with prize money of ₹13 lakhs for a ticket costing ₹1000 each. The event, held in March 2025, allegedly drew around 5,000 people from across Goa. It was conducted without legal permission from the Entertainment Tax Department or sound permission from the Collector of South Goa. The letter also mentions that the SDPO Margao and the PI of Colva Traffic Police reportedly went on leave after receiving bribes, allowing the illegal activities to continue.
The petitioners, Santana Piedade Afonso and Cruz Fernandes, urge for a thorough investigation under the Gambling Act, Entertainment Tax Act, Income Tax Act, and Lottery Act. They request that the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), Crime Branch, Cyber Crime Cell, and Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) be involved in the inquiry to arrest the organizers and police officers involved.
“As per the Gambling Act, such activities are cognizable and punishable offences,” a sentiment echoed in recent directives against gambling activities in South Goa. The letter emphasizes the need for legal action, noting, “Failure to stop the said illegal Tambola house will enable us to file a criminal suit before the court of law.”
Margao has faced recurring issues with illegal gambling. Residents have expressed concerns that the area has become a hub for such activities, despite efforts by police to curb them. The South Goa district Collector has directed officials to monitor and take action against housie and other illegal gambling activities under the Public Gambling Act, 1976.
