CORGAO: In a significant enforcement action, the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has ordered the immediate closure of an unauthorized poultry unit operating in Konadi, Corgao, Pernem. The unit, identified as M/s Labbaik and located in Survey No. 189/2, was found to be violating key environmental regulations.
The closure follows a formal complaint lodged by Mr. Rahul Ulhas Bhagat, a resident of Konadi, on April 22, 2025. Acting on the complaint, GSPCB officials conducted a site inspection on May 9, 2025, and discovered that the unit was operating without the mandatory Consent to Operate under both the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, and the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981.
During the inspection, officials observed severe environmental breaches, including foul odor, improper waste management, and general pollution in the surrounding area — corroborating the claims made in Mr. Bhagat’s complaint.
Taking swift action, GSPCB’s Member Secretary Mr. Sanjeev Joglekar issued closure orders under Section 33(A) of the Water Act and Section 31(A) of the Air Act. The unit has been directed to cease all operations immediately until it secures the requisite environmental clearances.
Copies of the closure order have also been forwarded to the Deputy Collector of Pernem, who has been tasked with sealing the facility and ensuring full compliance. A compliance report has been requested by the Board.
The GSPCB emphasized that this action underlines its commitment to enforcing environmental norms and responding to public concerns — particularly in ecologically sensitive regions such as Corgao.
“This is a clear message to all polluting and unauthorized units operating without regulatory approval. Violations will not be tolerated,” an official source from the Board stated.
