PANAJI: Club Cadenza of Don Bosco College, Panaji, organized an engaging workshop titled “The Fundamentals of Songwriting and Musical Expression” on March 12, 2026, at the Bicentenary Hall. The programme, held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., aimed to introduce students to the creative art of songwriting while encouraging them to view music as a meaningful form of self expression.
The event began with a welcome for the dignitaries, followed by an address by the Principal, Prof. Teotone Vaz. In his remarks, he encouraged students to cultivate their artistic talents and confidently explore creative pursuits alongside their academic goals.
The workshop was conducted by musician, composer, and songwriter Roque Lazarus. Through an engaging presentation, he introduced students to the core elements involved in writing songs. Drawing from his personal musical journey, he explained that imagination, discipline, and regular practice are essential in developing a meaningful and rewarding path in music.
One of the highlights of the session was its interactive format, which encouraged active participation from students. Lazarus guided participants through the process of collaboratively composing a song. Students were involved in creating lyrics while also learning how musical notes and chords are added to shape the composition.
In a lively demonstration, he showed how quickly basic guitar skills can be learned by teaching a student to play a simple chord progression within a minute. The activity illustrated how music can become accessible and enjoyable with the right guidance. Other students joined in by playing the xylophone, adding to the collaborative musical experience and creating an energetic atmosphere in the hall.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Club Cadenza convenor Andrea D’souza. The principal later presented a token of appreciation to the guest speaker.
The workshop left students inspired and motivated to experiment with songwriting, helping them gain confidence in expressing their creativity through music.
