PANAJI: The Southwest monsoon has advanced into the southern Bay of Bengal, over Nicobar islands and the south Andaman Sea, said the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The monsoon has made an on-time advance over the Maldives and Comorin areas as well, the Met department added. In 2023, the southwest monsoon onset over the South Andaman Sea was realised on May 19.
Pre-monsoon thunderstorm activity is likely to build up over Kerala and Coastal Karnataka. An offshore vortex will take the heavy rainfall activity over Kerala and southern parts of Coastal Karnataka.
This may stop short of Karwar, the neighbouring city of Goa. Typical pre-monsoon and then monsoon showers will have to wait for the surge to build up. It is nearly following the track lines of last year when there was the least pre-monsoon activity throughout the month.
The year previous to that, in May 2022, the colonial city had off-and-on, sporadic showers, beating the pre-monsoon heat and humidity.
Most parts of Goa received thundershowers accompanied by lightning this evening. Valpoi received maximum rainfall of 40 mm followed by Mapusa 14.5 mm, Pernem 7.5 mm and Old Goa 6.5 mm. Rain also came as a relief from heart as temperature was brought down in Goa to 24.2 to 25.4 degrees.
