PANAJI: In several areas of the State, unseasonal rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds persisted, with India Meteorological Observatory (IMD), Altinho, extending the yellow alert until Sunday, May 26.
According to a forecast released by the IMD, light to moderate rainfall, a thundershower with lightning, and gusty winds of 30 to 40 mph were expected in the State’s talukas in the next one to three hours.
Tree collapses and power outages have been reported in numerous locations.
Another lightning strike was reported at Duler-Mapusa, where it partially damaged a house and its electrical appliances but did not injure any of the occupants.
Over the next three to four days, the IMD has also predicted light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, and lightning in a few isolated locations throughout the State.
In view of the strong winds and rough sea conditions, the IMD has advised stopping or regulating beach sports activities. “Tourists should not be permitted to enter the sea while rough sea conditions prevail,” the IMD stated in a press release.
On May 14, the India Meteorological Observatory extended the yellow alert for the State till May 17, predicting that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and winds gusting to 30-40 kmph were very likely at isolated places over North and South Goa districts. It was again extended on May 16.
