PANAJI: India Meteorological Department (IMD), Panaji, extended the yellow-coded heatwave alert to Wednesday, as the mercury continued to remain high in places outside the city.
According to officials, the heatwave is expected to intensify over the next few days, with temperatures likely to touch 40°C in some areas.
IMD said dry weather prevailed in Goa on Monday, with Panaji recording the highest maximum temperature at 33.6 degrees Celsius.
India is likely to experience extreme heat during the April to June period with central and western peninsular parts facing the worst impact.
IMD in its forecast has predicted hot and humid conditions to prevail over isolated pockets of South and North districts till March 12, as temperatures are expected to hover around 34 to 35 degree Celsius.
“Hot and humid conditions are very likely to prevail over isolated pockets of North and South Goa till March 12. Weather is very likely to be dry over North Goa and South Goa districts of the State. Maximum temperatures are very likely to prevail between 35-37 Celsius over Goa. Shallow to moderate fog is very likely in the morning,” the IMD said in a statement.
In preparation for the approaching hot season, the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) has released a public health advise on how to protect oneself and others from heat-related illnesses.
DHS has recommended that people stay hydrated by drinking water, lemon-based beverages, coconut water, buttermilk, ORS, and watery fruits and vegetables like cucumbers, oranges, muskmelon, and watermelon, as well as by wearing light-colored, loose-fitting cotton clothing and head coverings or umbrellas with sunscreen.
Avoid leaving children, pets, etc. in a closed parked car because temperatures may rise significantly; avoid tea, coffee, alcohol, and soft drinks; avoid moving out between 12 and 3 pm, especially on days when heat alerts are issued; and cook in cooler temperatures instead of in the afternoon.
