PANAJI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded an orange alert for Goa from May 20 to 22, warning of very heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning and gusty winds that could cause significant disruptions across the coastal state. Following this, a yellow alert has been issued for May 23 and 24, as unsettled weather conditions are expected to persist.
The IMD’s forecast highlights the likelihood of hazardous sea conditions along Goa’s coastline during this period. Fishermen and those engaged in maritime activities have been strongly advised against venturing into the sea due to anticipated high wind speeds and rough waters, which pose serious safety risks.
This heightened weather activity corresponds with the seasonal progression of the southwest monsoon, which traditionally makes its official onset over Kerala around June 1. The current pre-monsoon disturbances signal an intensification of monsoonal influence over Goa, marking a critical transition period for the region’s climate.
Local authorities, including disaster management and emergency response teams, have been placed on alert to manage any potential weather-related incidents. Residents and tourists have been urged to remain vigilant, monitor updates from the meteorological department, and avoid unnecessary travel during the alert period to ensure safety.
In addition to taking precautions during adverse weather, the public has been reminded to secure loose objects and avoid low-lying or flood-prone areas as heavy rainfall may lead to waterlogging and localized flooding.
The IMD continues to closely monitor the evolving weather situation and will provide timely updates to aid in preparedness and response efforts. As Goa braces for these challenging weather conditions, cooperation between the community and authorities will be essential to minimize risks and safeguard lives and property.
