PANAJI: Goa has had a notable increase in rainfall following the monsoon season’s relatively mild beginning, with 26% more rain falling in the first nine days of July than in previous years.
There will be heavy rainfall activity over the state in the upcoming week, according to a warning from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). As a monsoon trough intensifies over the area, locals and visitors have been advised to prepare for potentially extreme weather conditions.
For the next 24 hours, the IMD has also issued a flash flood risk warning. Potential flooding has been alerted to local authorities, particularly in low-lying parts of Panaji, the capital city, such as 18th June Road, Patto, Mala, and Taleigao.
IMD reports that Goa received 1,544.9 mm of rain overall between June 1 and July 9, far more than the region’s average of 1,225.2 mm. Compared to early July, when the state typically recorded just 1% excess rain, this is a significant change.
There has been a wide distribution of rainfall, with significant amounts falling in both the North and South Goa districts. There was a 27.1% excess of rain in North Goa (1,592.2 mm) compared to a normal of 1,252.3 mm, and a 25.1% surplus in South Goa (1,503.2 mm) compared to a normal of 1,201.4 mm.
According to the IMD, there is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in both the North Goa and South Goa districts, with certain areas possibly experiencing extremely heavy rainfall. Extremely heavy rainfall, according to the IMD, is defined as more than 204.5 mm of precipitation in a 24-hour period.
On July 10, the forecast calls for heavy to extremely heavy rain in certain areas. In certain areas, persistently high rainfall is predicted from July 11 to July 13. Alongside the rainy spells, there is a good chance of strong surface winds with gusts of up to 50 km/h, which could increase the risk of damage to trees and weak structures.
