New Delhi: In a surprising turn of events, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar has openly commended Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Kumar for his handling of the recent controversy surrounding Delhi High Court Judge Yashwant Varma. The praise comes in the wake of a startling discovery of burnt cash at Justice Varma’s residence during Holi celebrations on March 14.
Speaking in New Delhi on Monday, Dhankhar highlighted the unprecedented nature of the Chief Justice’s response to the situation. He particularly praised the decision to make public the full report from the Delhi High Court, with only minimal redactions. “This level of transparency from the judiciary is a first since independence,” Dhankhar remarked, emphasizing the importance of such actions in maintaining public trust in key institutions.
The Rajya Sabha Chairman went on to describe the Chief Justice’s approach as “impactful” and “transparent,” urging all parties involved to await the findings of the newly appointed three-member inquiry panel. Dhankhar also revealed that he had engaged in discussions with BJP’s JP Nadda and Congress’ Mallikarjun Kharge, the Leader of the House and Opposition in the Rajya Sabha respectively, regarding the matter.
In a related development, Justice Varma has been formally transferred from the Delhi High Court to the Allahabad High Court, pending final approval from the central government. This transfer, initially linked to the cash discovery, has since been clarified by the Supreme Court as unrelated to the incident. The court has established a separate inquiry to investigate the cash recovery.
Justice Varma has vehemently denied any connection between himself or his family members and the discovered money. He described the outhouse where the cash was found as “disconnected from the main residence” and accessible to others, suggesting potential foul play.
The controversy has also sparked debate within the fire services, with Delhi Fire Services chief Atul Garg refuting reports attributing statements about the cash discovery to him. As the situation unfolds, all eyes remain on the forthcoming inquiry and its potential implications for the judiciary.
