PANAJI: Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao on Tuesday raised concerns over the long-pending cases of compassionate appointments in the Goa government and demanded that the existing cap on such appointments be increased to provide timely relief to affected families.
Raising the issue during Zero Hour in the Goa Legislative Assembly, Alemao said that more than 700 applications for compassionate appointments have been pending for the past five to eight years, leaving many families of deceased government employees without financial security.
He said the current system defeats the very purpose of compassionate appointments, which are meant to provide immediate support to families that lose their primary source of income after the death of a government employee in service.
“The procedure needs urgent revision. The cap must be increased to ensure justice for families in distress. The very purpose of compassionate appointment is to offer immediate financial relief to bereaved families,” Alemao said.
The Leader of Opposition pointed out that when a government employee dies while in service, the family suddenly loses its main source of livelihood. However, he said, the prolonged delay in providing employment support only adds to their hardship.
“But the government provides job relief only after five to eight years. That is not compassion; it is procedural cruelty,” Alemao said, urging the government to revise the system so that the true spirit of compassionate appointments is upheld and families receive timely assistance.
