New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that India and Mauritius will continue to work together for peace and stability in the Indian Ocean region after he held a telephone conversation with his Mauritian counterpart Navinchandra Ramgoolam. The leaders reviewed ongoing cooperation and expressed satisfaction over the growing partnership between the two nations.
In a message shared after the call, the Prime Minister described the discussion as warm and productive. He recalled the meeting held in Varanasi last year and noted that relations between the two countries have advanced steadily since then. Both sides reaffirmed their resolve to further strengthen the historic and people centred ties that have linked India and Mauritius for generations.
Modi stated that cooperation between the two countries covers a wide range of sectors and reflects mutual trust. He added that India looks forward to welcoming the Mauritian leader again when he visits for the upcoming AI Impact Summit.
During Ramgoolam’s visit to India in September last year, the two governments had agreed to deepen collaboration in areas such as infrastructure development, healthcare, digital technology, renewable energy and maritime security. Several memorandums of understanding were also signed to expand institutional cooperation and investment.
India has maintained close engagement with Mauritius, which occupies a strategic position in the Indian Ocean. The partnership has included support for development projects, capacity building and security cooperation aimed at ensuring safe sea lanes and regional stability.
In another significant gesture last year, Prime Minister Modi handed over Overseas Citizen of India cards to the Mauritian Prime Minister and his spouse. Earlier, during the state visit of President Droupadi Murmu to Mauritius, India extended eligibility for OCI status to people of Indian origin in the country up to the seventh generation, a move welcomed by the diaspora community.
The latest interaction between the two leaders underlines the importance both nations attach to their relationship and their shared vision for a secure and prosperous Indian Ocean region.
