New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday held a telephonic conversation with Venezuela’s Acting President Delcy Rodriguez, during which both leaders agreed to deepen and expand bilateral relations across a wide range of sectors. The discussion marked the first direct engagement between the two sides since the recent change in leadership in Venezuela.
During the conversation, Prime Minister Modi emphasised India’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Venezuela and expressed confidence that relations between the two countries would reach new levels in the coming years. He noted that India and Venezuela share a common vision of cooperation based on mutual respect, development priorities, and long term collaboration.
The leaders agreed to enhance engagement in key areas including trade and investment, energy cooperation, digital technology, healthcare, agriculture, and people to people exchanges. Both sides acknowledged the importance of unlocking the full potential of these sectors to deliver tangible benefits for their citizens and economies. The conversation reflected a shared intent to build a diversified and forward looking partnership.
Prime Minister Modi and Acting President Rodriguez also exchanged views on regional and global developments. They underlined the need for closer coordination on issues affecting the Global South, highlighting the role of emerging economies in shaping a more balanced and inclusive international order. The leaders agreed that cooperation among developing nations is essential to address shared challenges and promote sustainable growth.
Rodriguez assumed office earlier this month following the detention of former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife by the United States. The leadership transition has drawn international attention, placing renewed focus on Venezuela’s diplomatic engagements and future direction.
The call signalled India’s intent to maintain constructive engagement with Venezuela during this period of change. Both leaders expressed interest in sustaining regular communication and advancing cooperation through institutional mechanisms.
The discussion reinforced India’s broader outreach to Latin America and its focus on building stable, long term partnerships beyond traditional regions. By reaffirming their commitment to cooperation and dialogue, India and Venezuela set the tone for a renewed phase in bilateral relations grounded in development, connectivity, and shared global interests.
