New Delhi: Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has named India as one of his favourites to win the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, expressing confidence in the team’s current form and depth across departments. The tournament will feature 20 teams and will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka, with matches scheduled across five venues in India and three in Sri Lanka.
Ganguly said the Indian side, led by Suryakumar Yadav, appears well balanced and is performing at a high level heading into the global event. According to him, the strength of the team lies in its batting firepower, quality spin options, and a pace attack spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah. He emphasised that while past performances do not define future outcomes, the ability to peak during the tournament is crucial, and he believes India are well placed to do so.
The former left handed batter noted that India possess significant experience and match winning ability, which could prove decisive in high pressure situations. He said major tournaments often come down to timing and form, and expressed confidence that Indian players would rise to the occasion during the World Cup.
India will begin their campaign on February 7 in Mumbai against the United States, followed by a match against Namibia on February 11 in New Delhi. One of the most anticipated fixtures of the group stage will see India take on Pakistan on February 15 in Colombo. India will then face the Netherlands on February 18 in Ahmedabad as they continue their group stage run.
Ganguly also spoke about the excitement surrounding matches to be held in Kolkata. Eden Gardens is set to host seven games during the tournament, including an India fixture on March 1 and a semifinal, subject to qualification scenarios. He said the city and cricket fans are eagerly looking forward to the event, adding that Eden Gardens has a long history of hosting major international matches and is known for its vibrant atmosphere.
Recalling his association with the 2016 T20 World Cup, Ganguly said Kolkata has always embraced big tournaments with enthusiasm. He encouraged fans to attend matches not only involving India but also games featuring other competitive teams, noting that the World Cup promises high quality cricket, power hitting, and entertaining contests throughout the tournament.
