Panaji: The Ministry of External Affairs has clarified that India relationship with Bangladesh functions independently and is not influenced by New Delhi ties with any other country. The government stated in Parliament that it remains alert to developments affecting national interests and takes necessary measures to safeguard them.
Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh informed the Lok Sabha through a written reply that India supports a democratic, peaceful and inclusive Bangladesh. He said this position has been consistently conveyed to the interim authorities in Dhaka during various diplomatic engagements.
The minister emphasised that India closely monitors events in neighbouring nations, particularly those with implications for security and economic interests. Relations with neighbouring countries remain a top priority and are guided by mutual benefit and the prevailing situation, he added.
The statement came in response to questions on whether bilateral relations were passing through a sensitive phase and if any external power was trying to take advantage of the situation. Singh noted that India and Bangladesh share deep historical, cultural and social bonds, and cooperation continues to focus on development and people to people contact.
On concerns regarding reports of violence against minorities in Bangladesh, the government said the matter has been repeatedly raised with Bangladeshi authorities, including at the highest political level. The issue was discussed by Indian leadership during a meeting with the visiting Foreign Advisor of Bangladesh in February 2025. India continues to track such reports closely while stressing that the primary responsibility for protecting all citizens lies with Bangladesh.
Responding to queries about regional security dynamics and the possibility of emerging alignments involving Pakistan and China, the minister said India remains vigilant about all developments that could affect its borders, economy or strategic interests. Appropriate steps are taken whenever required to ensure national security.
The government reiterated that engagement with neighbours is pursued through diplomatic dialogue, development partnerships, trade, connectivity projects and regional cooperation mechanisms under the Neighbourhood First Policy and Vision MAHASAGAR. These efforts aim to promote peace, stability and prosperity across the region.
India, the ministry affirmed, will continue to work constructively with Bangladesh while firmly protecting its own national interests and the well being of people on both sides of the border.
