BENAULIM: INDI Alliance Candidate Joseph Pimenta has won the Benaulim Zilla Panchayat bye polls with 3049 more votes than his nearest opponent Grrayfans Fernandes.
Joseph managed to get 54.06% of the total vote share. Votes garnered by the 4 candidates in the fray are as follows- Joseph Pimenta’s 5672 votes, Grrayfans Fernandes’s 2623 votes, Royla Fernandes’s 1840 votes, Frank Fernandes’s 276 votes.
While AAP leader Pimenta who was the INDIA block candidate had announced his candidature on the party line the other three candidates contested as independents.
The turnout of voters on election day, according to candidates, indicates a desire for unity and change. Independent candidate Royla Fernandes, however, claimed that the AAP was forming an alliance with Congress to ensure its own political survival and that the BJP and AAP were conspiring together.
In terms of voting participation, 10,492 people have cast ballots, with women outnumbering men in the majority of polling places. There were more women than men among the 10,492 votes cast on Sunday—roughly 5,961 women and 4,531 men, to be exact.
A breakdown of the voting by village reveals that, although Benaulim village accounted for nearly half of all polling, the remaining villages, Varca, Orlim, Cavelossim, and Carmona, combined for the remaining half.
Following a decision by the High Court nullifying Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ZP member Hanzel Fernandes’ OBC caste certificate, a by-election was conducted. He was consequently removed from his role as a member of the Benaulim Zilla Panchayat.
For the 10 wards of 10 village panchayats which went for polls yesterday, the ward-wise winners are as follows – Priyanka Gaude – Ward VII-Cundaim, Sarvesh Naik – Ward II-Volvoi, Pradeep Jalmi – Ward III-Querim, Dattesh Naik – Ward XI Borim in Ponda Taluka, Meefa Dias – Ward V-Rachol, Julieta Gomes – Ward II Seraulim, Vandana Budhalkar – Ward I Assolna in Salcete Taluka, Shrikant Chiknekar – Ward II-Cudnem in Bicholim Taluka, Swaranjali Naik – Ward II-Xeldem in Quepem Taluka and Subhash Halarnkar – Ward X-Socorro in Bardez Taluka.
