New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday congratulated Sushila Karki on being sworn in as the interim Prime Minister of Nepal, reaffirming India’s commitment to Nepal’s peace, progress, and prosperity.
Karki took charge as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister days after nationwide protests toppled the government of KP Sharma Oli. The protests, led largely by the youth, demanded political accountability and reforms. Karki was administered the oath of office by Nepal’s President Ramchandra Paudel at the President’s Office.
Taking to social media platform X, PM Modi extended his best wishes, stating, “I extend my best wishes to Right Hon. Mrs. Sushila Karki on assuming office as the Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. India remains firmly committed to the peace, progress, and prosperity of the people of Nepal.”
Karki’s appointment marks a historic milestone as she becomes the first woman to serve as Nepal’s Prime Minister. Following her swearing-in, Nepal’s parliament was formally dissolved late Friday, and fresh elections have been scheduled for March 5, 2026.
India and Nepal share close ties rooted in geography, culture, religion, and language. The two countries are connected by a 1,751 km-long border across five Indian states Sikkim, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. Since May 2014, PM Modi has visited Nepal five times, while Nepal’s Prime Ministers have visited India ten times.
Karki’s rise to power is also notable for its democratic process she was chosen through an online public vote organized by Gen Z leaders on the platform Discord, reflecting a new wave of political participation in Nepal.
With this new leadership, India has expressed its intent to work closely with Nepal in supporting stability and strengthening regional cooperation.
