New Delhi: The Indian men’s hockey team snapped a seven-match losing streak in sensational style by defeating hosts Belgium 4-3 in a nail-biting FIH Pro League encounter on Sunday. In a match filled with end-to-end action, it was captain Harmanpreet Singh who rose to the occasion, converting a decisive penalty stroke just two minutes before the final hooter to seal the win for India.
With the score level at 3-3 and the clock ticking down, India opted for a video referral following a hard challenge inside the Belgian circle. The appeal was upheld, and Harmanpreet, known for his calm under pressure, made no mistake from the spot, driving the ball past the Belgian goalkeeper to hand his side a much-needed and morale-boosting win.
The match got off to a fast start with Belgium’s Arthur de Sloover firing his team into the lead in the 8th minute with a thunderous shot into the top corner. Belgium ended the first quarter with a 1-0 advantage, having dominated much of the early proceedings.
India, hungry for a comeback, responded in the second quarter through Sukhjeet Singh, who struck from a penalty corner with precision and power to level the score. However, Belgium again took the lead in the third quarter, this time through Nicolas Stockbroekx, who finished smartly to make it 2-1.
Sukhjeet Singh once again proved to be India’s saviour, equalising just a minute later with his second goal of the match—this time from open play. The thrilling see-saw battle continued as India edged ahead for the first time in the game through Amit Rohidas. After earning a penalty corner, Rohidas delivered a stunning flick that rippled the net, putting India 3-2 up.
But Belgium was not done yet. They hit back through Thibeau Labouchere, who netted his maiden international goal off a penalty corner, bringing the match to an intense 3-3 stalemate.
In the dying moments of the game, India’s persistence paid off when a challenge inside the circle led to the game-defining penalty stroke. Harmanpreet Singh’s cool finish ensured India walked away with all three points, breaking their dismal run in the European leg of the tournament.
Both teams started the match with attacking intent, but it was Belgium who seemed to take control midway through the game. However, the Indian team showed grit and resilience, crafting dangerous moves with a blend of long passes and quick counters to remain competitive throughout.
The victory not only brings India back into winning ways but also injects confidence into the squad as they look to close the European leg of the FIH Pro League on a strong note.
