New Delhi: India will face New Zealand in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 on Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium after a dramatic semifinal stage that set up the title clash between the two teams.
India secured their place in the final after edging past England in a high scoring semifinal. Batting first, India posted a massive total of 253 for seven, powered by a brilliant 89 from Sanju Samson. England nearly chased the target but eventually fell short by seven runs in a tense finish.
New Zealand, meanwhile, delivered a dominant performance in their semifinal against South Africa. The team chased down a target of 170 in just 12.5 overs to seal a convincing nine wicket victory and book their spot in the final.
The pitch for the final in Ahmedabad is expected to be a mixed soil surface containing both red and black soil, with a greater proportion of red soil. Such a surface is likely to provide consistent bounce and better conditions for batters, making it similar to the pitch used in the Mumbai semifinal. Experts believe the conditions could lead to another high scoring match, with a par score likely to be around 200.
So far in the tournament, the stadium has hosted only one match, in which South Africa scored 213 to defeat Canada. New Zealand have played one game at the venue during the tournament, while India have appeared twice, including a match where they suffered a loss to South Africa.
India’s campaign has been boosted by the outstanding form of Sanju Samson, who has emerged as one of the tournament’s top performers. The wicketkeeper batter has scored 232 runs in four matches at an average of over 77 and a strike rate above 200. His explosive innings have also helped him equal the record of Virat Kohli for the highest score by an Indian in a T20 World Cup knockout match.
Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has praised head coach Gautam Gambhir for backing Samson’s inclusion in the squad, crediting the decision for the batter’s impressive performances during the tournament.
India are also expected to retain their current playing combination for the final despite a lean run of scores for opener Abhishek Sharma. The team management has shown confidence in the aggressive left handed batter, believing his attacking approach can still play a key role in the title clash.
India will be chasing their third T20 World Cup title, while New Zealand will aim to secure their first championship victory in the tournament’s history.
