New Delhi: India, along with fellow BRICS nations, has expressed deep alarm over the recent military strikes on Iran, calling them a violation of international law and the United Nations Charter. In a joint statement released by the expanded BRICS grouping, the countries urged immediate de-escalation and called for a return to diplomacy and dialogue to prevent further bloodshed in the volatile West Asia region.
The statement, which comes amid heightened tensions following a dramatic military confrontation involving Israel, Iran, and the United States, was issued by the 11-member BRICS bloc—including India, Russia, China, Brazil, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia.
“We express grave concern over the military strikes against Iran since 13 June 2025, which constitute a violation of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, and the subsequent escalation of the security situation in the Middle East,” the statement read, stopping short of directly naming the U.S. and Israel.
The conflict saw Israel launching an unprecedented offensive targeting Iran’s military and suspected nuclear facilities. Iran retaliated with a series of missile attacks. Over 900 people were reportedly killed in Iran during the 11-day confrontation, while Israel confirmed 28 deaths. The situation reached a boiling point when the United States intervened with large-scale airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear installations before a fragile ceasefire was declared.
Amid fears of a wider regional war and its ripple effects on global stability and the economy, the BRICS countries called for an urgent cessation of hostilities.
“In the face of rising tensions with unpredictable consequences for international peace and security, as well as for the world economy, we underscore the urgent need to break the cycle of violence and restore peace. We call on all parties to engage through existing channels of dialogue and diplomacy, with a view to de-escalating the situation and resolving their differences through peaceful means,” the joint statement said.
The BRICS grouping also expressed “serious concern” over attacks that could endanger peaceful nuclear facilities, underlining the importance of nuclear safety, especially in conflict zones. “Nuclear safeguards, safety, and security must always be upheld, including in armed conflicts, to protect people and the environment from harm,” it stated.
In a pointed message, the BRICS nations condemned any targeting of civilian populations or critical infrastructure. “We extend our sincere condolences to the families of the victims and express our solidarity with civilians affected,” the statement added.
The joint declaration also revived longstanding global demands for a nuclear weapons-free zone in the Middle East. “We reiterate our support for the establishment of a zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East, in line with relevant international resolutions,” it said.
By backing the BRICS statement, India reinforced its consistent position on upholding international law, protecting civilian lives, and promoting diplomacy over conflict. While maintaining strategic autonomy and avoiding direct criticism of specific nations, India joined the call for restoring calm and upholding peace through multilateral dialogue.
The move also highlights India’s evolving role within BRICS as a voice of balance and stability amid growing global polarisation, particularly in crisis-prone regions like West Asia.
